Communication

Communicating about food choices is hard because:

  • We make assumptions about what other people like or don't like and how other people feel about food
  • We have a hard time knowing what we want to eat
  • We struggle to translate thoughts into physical desire to eat
  • We don't want to make someone else feel bad about their food choices
  • We've been taught that we shouldn't have opinions about food
  • We don't trust our own judgement about food
  • We want someone else to care for us to make us feel loved
  • We want to be able to care for others to help them feel loved
  • We've been shamed about the choices we've made about food in the past
  • We don't want to criticize someone else about the food the prepare
  • We're embarassed about the foods we actually want to eat
  • We have a vague idea of what we want but don't know how to turn those feelings into words

This list could go on for a long time and there's a good chance that your top reason is missing from this list. But, the point is that

There are lots of reasons we struggle to communicate with other about the food that we want to or plan to eat!

Often, we fall back on habits and routines that lead to dissapointing outcomes.

We've seen too many instances where poor communication around food leads to feelings of rejection, incompetance, lack of caring and understanding. This is almost always a mistake and doesn't represent reality or how people really feel inside.

We believe there is a better way!

Using Food Cards with your other members of your family can help communication about food choices be more effective and lead to greater satisfaction with the food that is eaten and the relationships that are impacted.

Successful communication about food choices is critical to feeling good about what you're eating and what you're feeding to your family. But, it's also something that's often overlooked or taken for granted.
